Biography
Max Tulysewski is an Adelaide-based musician and music educator with a wealth of experience on stage, in the studio and in the classroom. He is passionate about sharing his love of music with audiences and students alike.
First picking up a pair of drumsticks in 2002, Max was named one of Drumscene Magazine’s Top 10 Best Up & Coming Drummers Under 16 in 2010. He studied at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, graduating with Bachelor of Music (Jazz Performance) in 2019, and is now regarded as one of Adelaide’s busiest and most in-demand musicians.
Max performs and records regularly with an extensive list of artists in wide variety of genres. Consistent national touring has led to performances at WOMADelaide, Adelaide Fringe Festival, Darwin Festival, Tamworth Country Music Festival, Illawarra Folk Festival, Dorrigo Folk & Bluegrass Festival, Groundwater Country Music Festival, Hoot! Adelaide Jazz Festival, Beer & BBQ Festival and the Gympie Music Muster.
Max has also performed as a support act for a variety of Australian artists including Cold Chisel, Matt Corby, The Living End, Troy Cassar-Daley, The Teskey Brothers, Regurgitator, The Black Sorrows, Dan Sultan, The Models and Kasey Chambers as well as international touring acts Stereolab (UK), Ash (Ire), Sparta (US), Tigers Jaw (US), Signals Midwest (US) and The 5.6.7.8’s (JPN).
In 2017, Max’s indie-rock act Donnarumma won the APRA AMCOS Emily Burrows Award (previous winners include the Hilltop Hoods, Special Patrol & the Fiddle Chicks). In 2023, Max’s punk band Superdose Gangway composed and recorded the original soundtrack for Australian film The Last Grind (dir. Pete Williams). The film premiered at the Adelaide Film Festival where it was selected for an encore screening as 'one of the most talked about films of the festival’.
Since 2013, Max has worked with vast number of students as a music educator. He delivers private 1-on-1 instrumental tuition to a roster of approx. 50 students per week on drum kit, percussion, piano and ukulele. In 2022, Max wrote the book Drum & Drummer Vol. 1 - an educational resource now also used by a number of other drum teachers.
Max has also directed a variety of ensembles featuring students of all ages and currently leads a marching drumline (Heathfield Renegades), a junkyard percussion ensemble (The Wallabeats), The Adelaide Hills Ukulele Group and high school ensembles including small jazz combos, concert bands and orchestras. Ensembles under Max’s direction have performed at Generations in Jazz, DreamBIG Children’s Festival, Primary Schools Festival of Music and the National Pharmacies Christmas Pageant.
In 2023, Max was proposed for the Telstra ARIA Music Teacher Award for his outstanding contribution to the Australian musical landscape and positive influence on his students' musical experience.
